Edom Refuses Passage

Numbers 20:14-21

Chapter 20
14 And Moses sent messengers from the sanctuary to the king of Edom: "This is what your brother Israel says: You know all the hardship that has befallen us." 15 And our fathers went down to Egypt, and we dwelt in Egypt many days, and they—the Egyptians—did evil to us and to our fathers. 16 And we cried out to the LORD, and he heard our voice, and he sent an angel and brought us out from Egypt, and here we are in Kadesh, a city at the edge of your border. 17 Let us pass through your land—we will not pass through field or vineyard, nor will we drink water from any well. We will travel on the king's highway; we will not turn to the right or to the left until we have passed your borders. 18 And he said to him, "Edom: You shall not pass through me, lest I come out with the sword to meet you." 19 And the sons of Israel said to him, "We will go up by the main road, and if we or our livestock drink any of your water, we will pay for it. There will be no charge for our feet; we will pass through." 20 And he said, "You shall not pass through," and Edom came out against him with many people and with a strong hand. 21 And Edom refused to give Israel passage through his territory, and he turned Israel away.
