Chapter 10
1 And calling his twelve disciples to himself, he gave them authority over unclean spirits, so as to cast them out and to heal every disease and every weakness. 2 Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, the one called Peter, and Andrew his brother, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother. 3 Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the tax collector, James of Alphaeus and Thaddaeus, 4 Simon the Cananaean and Jude the Iscariot, who also handed him over. 5 These twelve Jesus sent out, after charging them: "Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of the Samaritans." 6 Go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 But as you go, proclaim, "The kingdom of the heavens has drawn near." 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons; freely you received, freely give. 9 Do not acquire gold or silver or bronze for your belts. 10 Do not take a bag for the journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor a staff—for the worker is worthy of his food. 11 Whichever city or village you enter, find out who in it is worthy, and stay there until you leave. 12 But when you enter the house, greet it. 13 And if the house is indeed worthy, let your peace come upon it; but if it is not worthy, let your peace turn back to you. 14 And whoever does not receive you or hear your words, as you go out from that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet. 15 Amen, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that city. 16 Look, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore, be wise as snakes and innocent as doves. 17 But beware of people, for they will hand you over to Sanhedrins, and in their Jewish assemblies they will flog you. 18 And you will be led before governors and kings for my sake, as a witness to them and the nations. 19 But when they hand you over, do not be concerned how or what you should speak; for it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak. 20 For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking in you. 21 Brother will hand over brother to death, a father his child, and children will rise up against parents and have them put to death. 22 And you will be hated by all because of my name, but the one who endures to the end—this one will be saved. 23 But when they persecute you in this city, flee to the next one. For amen, I say to you, you will by no means finish the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes. 24 A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a slave above his lord. 25 It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the slave like his lord. If they called the householder Beelzebul, how much more his household members. 26 Therefore do not fear them. For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, nor hidden that will not be known. 27 What I tell you in the dark, tell in the light; and what you hear in your ear, proclaim from the rooftops. 28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear the one who is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for an assarion? Not one of them will fall to the earth without your Father. 30 But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 So do not fear; you are worth more than many sparrows. 32 Therefore everyone who confesses me before people, I will also confess him before my Father who is in heaven. 33 But whoever denies me before people, I will also deny him before my Father who is in heaven. 34 Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth; I did not come to bring peace but a sword. 35 For I came to divide a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a bride against her mother-in-law. 36 And a man's enemies will be the members of his household. 37 The one who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and the one who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 Whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 The one who finds his soul will lose it, and the one who loses his soul for my sake will find it. 40 The one who receives you receives me, and the one who receives me receives the one who sent me. 41 The one receiving a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and the one receiving a righteous one in the name of a righteous one will receive a righteous one's reward. 42 And whoever gives one of these little ones just a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, I tell you the truth, he will by no means lose his reward.
