The Rich Man and Lazarus

Luke 16:19-31

Chapter 16
19 But a certain rich man was clothing himself with purple and fine linen, rejoicing daily in splendor. 20 But a poor man named Lazarus had been thrown at his gate, covered with sores. 21 and desiring to be filled with the things falling from the rich man's table. But even the dogs came and were licking his sores. 22 And it came to pass that the poor man died and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom. And the rich man also died and was buried. 23 And in the realm of the dead, he lifted up his eyes, being in torment in Hades, and saw Abraham from afar and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 And he cried out and said, “Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am tormented in this flame.” 25 But Abraham said, "Child, remember that you received your good things in your life, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now here he is comforted, and you are tormented." 26 And in all these things a great gulf is fixed between us and you, so that those who want to cross from here to you cannot, nor can those cross from there to us. 27 But he said, "Father, I ask you to send him to my father's house." 28 for I have five brothers, so that he might solemnly testify to them, that they might not come to this place of torment also. 29 But Abraham said, “They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.” 30 But he said, "No, Father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent." 31 But he said to him: "If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone rises from the dead."
