Chapter 13
1 The LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 2 Send—for yourself—people to scout the land of Canaan, which I have given to the sons of Israel. Send a man for each tribe of his fathers, every one a prince among them. 3 And Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran at the mouth of the LORD; all of them men, heads of the sons of Israel. 4 These are their names: for the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zaccur. 5 To the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori. 6 For the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh. 7 For the tribe of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph. 8 For the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Nun. 9 For the tribe of Benjamin: Palti son of Raphu. 10 For the tribe of Zebulun: Gaddiel son of Sodi. 11 For the tribe of Joseph, for the tribe of Manasseh: Gaddi son of Susi. 12 To the tribe of Dan: Ammiel son of Gamliel. 13 For the tribe of Sattur son of Michael. 14 For the tribe of Naphtali: Nahbi son of Vophsi. 15 For the tribe of Gad, Geuel son of Machi. 16 These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, and he called Hoshea son of Nun Joshua. 17 And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and he said to them, "Go up this way into the Negev, and go up the hill country." 18 See the land—what it is like and the people who dwell in it: whether they are strong or weak, whether few or many. 19 What is the land like where he dwells—is it good or evil? And what are the cities like where he dwells—are they in camps or in strongholds? 20 And what—is the land fat or lean? Is there tree in it or not? And strengthen yourselves and take some of the fruit of the land. And the days were the days of the firstborn grapes. 21 They went up and spied out the land from the Wilderness of Zin to Rehob, near the entrance of Hamath. 22 They went up into the Negeb and came as far as Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, children of Anak, were. Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt. 23 They came to the Wadi Eshcol, cut a branch with one cluster of grapes from there, and carried it on a pole between two of them, along with some pomegranates and figs. 24 That place was called the Stream of the Cluster because of the cluster the sons of Israel cut off there. 25 They returned from exploring the land at the end of forty days.
