David's Rise and Saul's Jealousy

1 Samuel 18:1-30

Chapter 18
1 And it came about when he had finished speaking to Saul that the soul of Jonathan was bound to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. 2 Saul took him that day and did not let him return to his father's house. 3 Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as his own life. 4 And Jonathan stripped off the robe that was on him and gave it to David, along with his garments, his sword, his bow, and his belt. 5 David went out in all that Saul sent him to do. He succeeded, and Saul set him over the men of war. It was good in the eyes of all the people and also in the eyes of Saul's servants. 6 When they came, when David returned from striking the Philistine, the women went out from all the cities of Israel with song and dances to meet King Saul, with timbrels, with joy, and with triangles. 7 The women who were playing responded and said, "Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands!" 8 It burned against Saul very much, and this word was evil in his eyes. He said, "They have given David ten thousands, and to me they have given the thousands, and yet to him only the kingship." 9 Saul eyed David from that day onward. 10 The next day an evil spirit from God rushed upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house. David played with his hand as day by day, and the spear was in the hand of Saul. 11 Saul hurled the spear and said, "I will strike David and the wall." David turned away from his presence twice. 12 Saul was afraid of David, for the LORD was with him and had turned aside from Saul. 13 And Saul removed him from his presence and set him as commander of a thousand, and he went out and came before the people. 14 David was successful in all his ways, and the LORD was with him. 15 Saul saw and he was succeeding very much, and he feared him. 16 And all Israel and Judah loved David, for he went out and came in before them. 17 Saul said to David, "Here is my older daughter Merab. I will give her to you as a wife. Only be a son of might for me and fight the LORD's battles." And Saul said, "May my hand not be against him, but let the hand of the Philistines be against him." 18 And David said to Saul, "Who am I, and what is my life or the clan of my father in Israel, that I should be son-in-law to the king?" 19 And when the time came to give Merab, Saul's daughter, to David, she was given to Adriel the Meholathite as a wife. 20 And Michal, daughter of Saul, loved David, and they told Saul, and the word was upright in his eyes. 21 And Saul said, "I will give her to him, and she will be a snare to him, and the hand of the Philistines will be in him." And Saul said to David, "You will be given in marriage to me today with two." 22 And Saul commanded his servant to tell David his word secretly, saying, "Behold, the king delights in you, and all his servants love you. Now marry the king's daughter." 23 And Saul's servants spoke these words in the ears of David. And David said, "Is it a light thing in your eyes to become son-in-law to the king, while I am a poor man and lightly esteemed?" 24 Saul's servants told him, saying, "David spoke according to these words." 25 And Saul said, "This is what you shall say to David: 'The king has no desire for a bride-price, but rather a hundred foreskins of the Philistines to avenge the king's enemies.'" And Saul thought to cause David to fall by the hand of the Philistines. 26 And his servants told David these words, and the word was upright in David's eyes to marry the king, and the seas were not filled. 27 And David arose and went, he and his men, and struck down two hundred men among the Philistines. And David brought their foreskins and they filled them for the king, to bear iniquity in the king. And Saul gave to him Michal his daughter as wife. 28 Saul saw and knew that the LORD was with David, and that Michal, Saul's daughter, loved him. 29 And Saul continued to eye David jealously, and Saul was an enemy of David all the days. 30 The chiefs of the Philistines went out to battle, and whenever they went out, David succeeded more than all the servants of Saul. His name was greatly precious.
