Alliance Against Moab and Elisha’s Miracle

2 Kings 3:1-27

Chapter 3
1 Jehoram son of Ahab reigned over Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigned twelve years. 2 He did evil in the eyes of the LORD, only not like his father and like his mother. He removed the pillar of Baal that his father had made. 3 Only in the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he caused Israel to sin—he clung to them. He did not turn away from them. 4 Mesha king of Moab was a sheep breeder, and he paid the king of Israel a hundred thousand lambs and the wool of a hundred thousand rams. 5 When Ahab died, the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel. 6 King Jehoram left Samaria that day and mustered all Israel. 7 He went and sent to Jehoshaphat king of Judah, saying, "The king of Moab has sinned against me. Will you go with me to Moab to war?" And he said, "I will go up—like you, like me, like your people, like my people, like your horses, like my horses." 8 And he said, "Which way will we go up?" And he said, "The way of the Wilderness of Edom." 9 And the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom. And they went around a way of seven days, and there was no water for the camp and for the livestock that were at their feet. 10 The king of Israel said, "Oh no! The LORD has called these three kings together to hand them over to Moab." 11 And Jehoshaphat said, “Isn’t there a prophet of the LORD here, so we might inquire of the LORD through him?” One of the servants of the king of Israel answered and said, “Here is Elisha son of Shaphat, who poured water on the hands of Elijah.” 12 And Jehoshaphat said, “The LORD’s word is with him.” And they went down to him—the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom. 13 And Elisha said to the king of Israel, “What do I have to do with you? Go to the prophets of your father and the prophets of your mother.” And the king of Israel said to him, “No, for the LORD has called these three kings to give them into the hand of Moab.” 14 And Elisha said, "As the LORD of Hosts lives, before whom I stand, if it were not for the sake of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, I would not look at you or see you." 15 Now bring a harpist for me, and it will be that as the harpist plays, the hand of the LORD will be upon him. 16 And he said, "This is what the LORD says: Make this wadi pits, pits." 17 For thus the LORD has said: You will not see wind, and you will not see rain, but that stream will be filled with water, and you will drink—you and your livestock and your cattle. 18 And this will be easy in the eyes of the LORD, and he will give Moab into your hand. 19 You shall strike every fortified city and every chosen city, every good tree you shall fell, every spring of water you shall stop up, and every good portion you shall ruin with stones. 20 And it was in the morning, at the rising of the burnt offering, and behold—waters coming from the way of Edom, and the earth filled with the waters. 21 And all Moab heard that the kings had gone up to fight against them, and they cried out, everyone girding on his belt and going up, and they stood on the boundary. 22 And they rose early in the morning, and the sun shone on the waters, and Moab saw from opposite the waters red like blood. 23 They said, "This is blood; the kings have been cut off by the sword, and they struck each man his neighbor; and now, to the spoil of Moab." 24 They came to the camp of Israel, and Israel arose and struck Moab. They fled from their presence, and they struck in it—the striking of Moab. 25 And they will demolish the cities, and every good field they will throw—each man his stone and fill it—and every spring of water they will stop up, and every good tree they will fell, until he left its stones in the plaster wall. And the slingers went around and struck. 26 The king of Moab saw that the battle was too strong for him, and he took with him seven hundred men with drawn swords, to break through to the king of Edom, but they could not. 27 And he took his firstborn son, who would reign in his place, and he caused him to ascend as a burnt offering upon the wall. And there was great divine wrath upon Israel, and they departed from him and dwelt in the earth.
