David’s Preparations and Instructions for Solomon

1 Chronicles 22:2-19

Chapter 22
2 And David said to gather the sojourners who were in the land of Israel, and he appointed stonecutters to cut hewn stones to build the temple of God. 3 David prepared iron in abundance for the nails for the doors of the gates and for the joinings, and bronze in abundance—there is no weight. 4 Cedar trees without number, for the Sidonians and the Tyrians brought cedar trees in abundance to David. 5 David said, "Solomon my son is young and tender, and the house to build for the LORD is to magnify upward to name and to glory for all the lands. Please let me prepare for him." And David prepared abundantly before his death. 6 He called Solomon his son and commanded him to build the temple for the LORD God of Israel. 7 David said to Solomon, "My son, I had it in my heart to build a house for the name of the LORD my God." 8 The word of the LORD came to me, saying, "You have poured out blood in abundance, and you have made great wars; you shall not build the temple for my name, for you have poured out much blood on the earth before me." 9 Look—a son is born to you; he will be a man of rest, and I will give rest to him from all his enemies all around, for Solomon will be his name and peace, and I will give quiet upon Israel in his days. 10 He will build a house for my name, and he will be to me for a son, and I to him for a father, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever. 11 Now, my son, may the LORD be with you, and may you prosper and build the house of the LORD your God just as he spoke concerning you. 12 Only may the LORD give you wisdom and understanding, and charge you over Israel, and to keep the Torah of the LORD your God. 13 Then you will succeed if you keep to do the statutes and the judgments which the LORD commanded Moses concerning Israel. Be strong and courageous; do not fear and do not be dismayed. 14 And behold, in my poverty I have provided for the house of the LORD gold talents one hundred thousand, and silver a thousand thousands talents, and for bronze and for iron there is no weight, for there was much, and timber and stones I have provided, and upon them you will add. 15 And your people, in great abundance, do the work: stone-cutters and stone-workers and wood-workers and every skilled artisan in every work. 16 There is no number to the gold, to the silver, to the bronze, and to the iron. Arise and do, and may the LORD be with you. 17 David commanded all the chiefs of Israel to help Solomon his son. 18 Is not the LORD your God with you? And he has given you rest all around, for he gave the inhabitants of the land into my hand, and the land was subdued before the LORD and before his people. 19 Now give your heart and your soul to seek the LORD your God. Arise and build the sanctuary of the LORD God, to bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD and the vessels of the holy things of God into the house that is being built for the name of the LORD.
