David's Lament for Saul and Jonathan

2 Samuel 1:17-27

1
Chapter 1
17 David sang this lament over Saul and over Jonathan his son. 18 He commanded them to teach the sons of Judah: "The bow—behold, it is written in the Book of the Upright." 19 How have the mighty men of Israel fallen! The glory is profaned on your high places! 20 Do not tell it in Gath; do not announce it in the streets of Ashkelon, lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised exult. 21 Mountains of Gilboa, no dew or rain upon you, fields of the contribution—for there the shield of mighty men was defiled, the shield of Saul, without anointing in oil. 22 From the blood of the slain, from the fatness of the mighty men, the bow of Jonathan did not turn back backward, and the sword of Saul did not return empty. 23 Saul and Jonathan, the beloved and the pleasant ones, in their life and in their death they were not separated; they were swifter than eagles, they were mightier than lions. 24 Daughters of Israel, weep for Saul, who clothed you in scarlet with delights, who brought gold ornaments on your clothing. 25 How have mighty men fallen in the midst of the battle! Jonathan is slain on your high places. 26 I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan. You have been very pleasant to me. Your love to me has been wonderful, more than the love of women. 27 How the mighty ones have fallen, and the implements of warfare have perished!
