Saul's Rash Oath and Its Consequences

1 Samuel 14:15-23

Chapter 14
15 And there was terror in the camp, in the field, and in all the people, the host, and the destroyers—they trembled, they also, and the land quaked and became a terror of God. 16 And the watchmen of Saul on the hill of Benjamin saw, and behold, the mass melted away and went and clashed. 17 And Saul said to the people who were with him, "Please muster now and see who has gone from us." And they mustered, and behold, there was no Jonathan and his bearing iniquity cultic Temple/ritual vessels/utensils. 18 And Saul said to Ahiah, "Bring near the Ark of God," for the Ark of God was in that day with the sons of Israel. 19 And it was until Saul's word to the priest, and the multitude in the camp of Philistines went and increased, and Saul said to the priest, "Gather your hand." 20 And Saul called out and all the people who were with him, and they came to the battle. And behold, the battle had turned: every man's sword was against his fellow, and there was a very great confusion. 21 And the Hebrews who had been with the Philistines yesterday and the third day, as they went up into the camp all around, also turned to be with Israel who were with Saul and Jonathan. 22 And every man of Israel who had been hiding in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines had fled, and they clung to them in the battle. 23 And the LORD saved Israel that day, and the battle passed beyond Beth-aven.
