Chapter 23
1 And the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 2 Son of man, there were two women, daughters of one mother. 3 And they prostituted themselves in Egypt in their youth; there they prostituted themselves. From there they pressed their breasts, and there they made their nipples of their virginity. 4 And their names: Oholah the Great and Oholibah her sister. And they became mine, and they bore sons and daughters. And their names: Samaria Oholah and Jerusalem Oholibah. 5 And Oholah prostituted herself under her and lusted after her lovers, the near ones—Assyria. 6 Clothed in violet, governors and prefects, chosen, all of them horsemen, riders of horses. 7 And she gave her prostitutions upon them, the choice sons of Assyria, all of them, and with all for which she lusted; with all their idols she became defiled. 8 And she did not leave her cultic prostitutions from Egypt, for they lay with her in her youth, and they made her breasts of her virginity, and they poured their cultic prostitution on her. 9 Therefore I gave her into the hand of her lovers, into the hand of the sons of Assyria, which she lusted after them. 10 They revealed her nakedness; they took her sons and her daughters, and they killed her with the sword. She became a spectacle for women, and they made her a judge. 11 And she saw her sister Oholibah, and she corrupted her, lusting more than her and in her prostitutions than in the prostitutions of her sister. 12 She lusted after the sons of Assyria, the governors and officials, approaching clad in full clothing, horsemen riders of horses, choice ones of desire, all of them. 13 And I saw that she was defiled; they had one way for both of them. 14 She added to her prostitutions and saw men portrayed on the wall, images of Chaldeans engraved in vermilion. 15 girded with belts on their loins, flowing turbans on their heads, appearance of nobles all of them, likeness of the sons of Babel, Chaldeans, land of their native land. 16 And she lusted after them at the sight of her eyes, and she sent messengers to them in Chaldea. 17 And the sons of Babel came to her for lovings' lying, and they defiled her with their prostitutions, and she defiled herself with them, and her vital life force was alienated from them. 18 And she revealed her prostitutions and she revealed her nakedness, and my soul was loathed from upon her just as my soul was loathed from upon her sister. 19 And she multiplied her prostitutions to remember the days of her youth, when she prostituted herself in the land of Egypt. 20 And she lusted after their concubines, whose flesh was like the flesh of donkeys and whose emission was like the emission of horses. 21 And you visited the lewdness of your youth, in doing from Egypt the breasts of your youth for the sake of the breasts. 22 Therefore, Oholibah, thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I am rousing against you your lovers from whom your nephesh recoiled, and I will bring them against you from all around. 23 Sons of Babel and all Chaldeans, Pekod and Shoa and Koa, all sons of Assyria with them, choice men of desire, governors and officials, all of them thirds and called, riders of horses, all of them. 24 And they will come upon you with shields of chariots and wheels, and in an assembly of peoples they will set shields and buckler and helmet upon you all around, and I will give judgment before them, and they will judge you by their judgments. 25 And I will set my jealousy against you, and they will deal with you in the wrath of your nose; and they will remove your ears, and your latter end they will cause to fall by the sword; they will take your sons and your daughters, and your latter end will be eaten in the fire. 26 And they will strip you of your garments and take the vessels of your splendor. 27 And I will cause your lewdness to cease from you and your prostitution from the land of Egypt. And you will not lift up your eyes to them, and you will not remember Egypt anymore. 28 For thus says the Lord GOD: Here I am, giving you into the hand of those you hated, into the hand of those your soul was disgusted with. 29 And they will deal with you in hatred and take all your toil and leave you nakedness and your cities and your settlements, and your nakedness of your prostitutions and your abominations will be revealed. 30 These things he has done to you in your prostitution after nations, on account of which you have become ritually impure in their idols. 31 In the way of your sister you have gone, and I have given her cup into your hand. 32 This is what the Lord GOD says: You shall drink your sister’s cup, which is deep and wide. It will hold much, to your mocking and derision. 33 You will fill with drunkenness and sorrow—a cup of desolation, a cup of desolation—a cup of your sister Samaria. 34 You will drink it and drain it, and you will gnaw its potsherds, and you will tear off your breasts, for I have spoken, says the Lord GOD. 35 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Because you have forgotten me and cast me behind your back, and also because of your lewdness and your prostitutions. 36 And the LORD said to me, "Son of Adam, will you judge Oholah and Oholibah and declare to them their abominations?" 37 for they committed adultery and blood is in their hands and with their idols they committed adultery and also their sons whom they bore to me they passed to them for food. 38 Moreover, this they did to me: They defiled my sanctuary on that day, and they profaned my Sabbaths. 39 And when they were slaughtering their sons to their idols, they came to my sanctuary on that day to profane it—and behold, this is what they did in the midst of my house. 40 And moreover, when you send to men coming from afar to whom a messenger is sent—and behold, they came—for whom you bathed, you painted your eyes, and you adorned yourself with ornaments. 41 And she sat on a glorious bed with a table set before it, and she offered incense and my oil upon it. 42 And the voice of a multitude at ease was with her, and with men from the multitude of humanity, Sabaeans brought from the wilderness, and they put bracelets on their hands and a crown of glory on their heads. 43 And he said to the adulterers, "Now her prostitutions will prostitute," and she. 44 And they came to her as one comes to a prostitute woman. In this way they came to Oholah and to Oholibah, the wife of lewdness. 45 And righteous men will judge her with the judgment of adulteresses and with the judgment of blood-shedders, for behold, she has committed adultery and blood is on her hands. 46 For thus says the Lord GOD: "Bring up an assembly against them and give them to scorn and plunder." 47 And they stoned them with stones of the assembly and burned her with their swords; they will kill their sons and their daughters, and they will burn their houses with fire. 48 And I will cause abomination to cease from the land, and all the women will be disciplined, and they will not act like your abomination. 49 And they will put your lewdness upon you, and they will bear the sins of your idols, and you will know that I am the Lord GOD.
