Chapter 18
To the director. For the servant of the LORD, for David, the words of this song that he spoke to the LORD on the day the LORD saved him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. 1 He said: "I love you, O LORD, my strength." 2 The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my high place. 3 I call to the LORD, my rock and my fortress, my deliverer, my God, my rock in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my high fortress. 4 The cords of death encompassed me, and the torrents of Belial terrified me. 5 The cords of Sheol surrounded me; the snares of Death confronted me. The torrents of Belial terrified me. 6 In my distress I called to the LORD, and to my God I cried for help. He hears my voice from his palace, and my cry comes into his ears before him. 7 And the earth quaked and quaked, and the foundations of the mountains trembled and quaked because he burned with anger. 8 Smoke went up in his nostrils, and fire from his mouth devoured; coals blazed from him. 9 He made the heavens dark and descended, with thick darkness under his feet. 10 And he rode on a cherub and flew; and he darted upon the wings of the wind. 11 He rode on a cherub and flew; he soared on the wings of the spirit. 12 From the brightness before him, his clouds passed, hail and coals of fire. 13 The LORD thundered in the heavens, and the Most High gave his voice—hail and coals of fire. 14 He sent his arrows and scattered them, and many lightnings, and he struck them down. The LORD Most High thundered in heaven; he gave his voice—hail and coals of fire. 15 The channels of waters saw, and the foundations of the world were uncovered by your rebuke, O LORD, by the blast of the wind of your nostrils. 16 He sends from on high, he takes me; he draws me out from many waters. 17 He delivered me from my enemies, mighty ones, and from my foes, for they had strengthened themselves against me. 18 They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the LORD was my support. 19 He brought me out into a broad place; he delivered me, for he delighted in me. 20 The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he has repaid me. 21 For I have kept the ways of the LORD and have not been wicked toward my God. 22 For all his judgments are before me, and I have not turned his statutes aside from me. 23 I was blameless before him, and I kept myself from my iniquity. 24 The LORD dealt with me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands before his eyes. 25 With the faithful you show yourself faithful; with the blameless man you show yourself blameless. 26 With the pious you act piously; with the blameless man you act blamelessly. 27 For you will save the pure-hearted, and you will bring down the twisted; you will humble haughty eyes. 28 For you will light my lamp; the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness. 29 For by you I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall. 30 As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is refined; he is a shield to all who take refuge in him. 31 For who is a god besides the LORD, and who is a rock except our God? As for God—his way is blameless; you have said, “The LORD is a refined shield; he is a shield for all who seek refuge in him.” 32 The God who girds me with strength and makes my way blameless. 33 He makes my feet like hinds' feet, and he stations me on my high places. 34 He trains my hands for war, and my arms bend a bronze bow. 35 You gave me the shield of your salvation, and your right hand supported me, and your humility made me great. 36 You broadened my footsteps beneath me, and my ankles did not slip. 37 I will pursue my enemies and overtake them, and I will not return until their failing. 38 I will crush them so they cannot rise; they will fall under my feet. 39 You girded me with strength for battle; you caused my foes to kneel under me. 40 You gave my enemies to me by the neck, and I destroyed my haters. 41 They cried for help, but there was no savior; to the LORD, but he did not answer them. 42 And I beat them like dust before the wind; like mud of the streets I pour them out. 43 You deliver me from my strife with peoples; you set me as head of nations; peoples I did not know serve me. 44 At the hearing of the ear they will hear me; sons of foreigners will submit to me. 45 The sons of foreign gods will wither and come out from their enclosures. 46 The LORD lives, and blessed be my Rock; may the God of my salvation be exalted. 47 The God who gives vengeance to me and subdues peoples under me. 48 The God who gives me vengeance and subdues peoples under me, my refuge from my enemies, even from those who rise up—from a man of violence you deliver me. 49 Therefore I will give thanks to you among the nations, LORD, and to your name I will sing praise. 50 He magnifies the salvations of his king and does lovingkindness to his anointed, to David and to his seed forever.
