na.gid denotes a person appointed or recognized as being over a people, house, territory, or entrusted charge.

The term consistently identifies a person placed over others or over a defined sphere of responsibility: over Israel and Judah, a house, treasuries, fortresses, or peoples. Its attested settings include anointed rule, household and cultic oversight, military placements, and prominent persons addressed or described in public contexts.

   The singular form marks persons appointed over a people or realm: in 1 Samuel 9:16 the man to be anointed over Israel is also said to save the people from the Philistines, while 1 Kings 1:35 places the appointed person over Israel and Judah. The same term also identifies oversight of particular responsibilities, as in 1 Chronicles 26:24 over the treasuries, Nehemiah 11:11 over the house of God, and 2 Chronicles 11:11 in fortified places. In Ezekiel 28:2 it introduces the person addressed as being over Tyre.

In the Anselm Project Bible: Across these verses the APB variously presents the office-holder as “leader,” “ruler,” “prince,” or an overseer over a specified group or charge. Because the APB is a whole-verse translation, those English variations reflect the clauses' settings rather than separate lexical senses.
