In Isaiah 25:4 the APB renders the clause about protection for the poor and needy in distress with “a stronghold” and “a refuge from the storm.” In Nahum 1:7 the LORD is presented as protection “in the day of distress,” while Psalm 37:39 calls him the security of the righteous in their time of distress. Jeremiah 16:19 places the term in a direct address to the LORD as the speaker's stronghold and refuge.

Fortified place or military stronghold · common
In Daniel 11:7 the clause describes entering the fortress of the king of the north, and Daniel 11:19 speaks of turning back toward the fortresses of one's land. Ezekiel 30:15 names Pelusium as Egypt's stronghold, while Isaiah 23:14 announces that the ships of Tarshish's stronghold is ruined. Judges 6:26 locates an altar on the top of a stronghold.
