she.lem denotes a sacrificial offering brought before the LORD, whose animal, fat, flesh, and occasions of presentation may be specified.

The term consistently denotes a sacrificial offering presented before the LORD. The verses describe animals brought for it, portions such as fat set apart on the altar, eating connected with it, and its use alongside burnt offerings and other offerings.

Senses in use

  1. A sacrificial offering and its ritual presentation · dominant

The plural absolute form names an offering brought before the LORD: in Leviticus 3:1 the APB renders an offering from cattle, male or female and unblemished, while Leviticus 3:3 specifies fat presented from that sacrifice. In Deuteronomy 27:7 it is sacrificed, eaten, and followed by rejoicing before the LORD; Exodus 20:24 and 1 Kings 8:64 place it alongside burnt offerings and refer to its fat at the altar.

In the Anselm Project Bible: Across the verses, the APB variously uses “peace offerings,” “fellowship offerings,” and “sacrifices of well-being.” These renderings confirm the sacrificial setting but do not establish separate lexical senses.
