The attested use chiefly identifies a land or dwelling as the setting in which someone lives as a sojourner, especially in clauses about Canaan and a father's former residence. Genesis 47:9 also applies the term to Jacob's years, presenting his life as a period of sojourning.

The plural construct form occurs in expressions identifying a land of residence: in Genesis 17:8 the APB renders “the land of your sojourning,” and in Genesis 37:1 it renders “the land of his father's sojourning.” Exodus 6:4, Genesis 28:4, Genesis 36:7, and Ezekiel 20:38 likewise place the term in clauses concerning a land where people sojourn or from which they are brought out.

In Genesis 47:9, two masculine plural construct forms occur in Jacob's answer to Pharaoh about his years; the APB renders the clause, “The years of my sojourning are one hundred and thirty.” The same construct usage can also name a dwelling setting in Job 18:19 and Psalm 119:54, where the APB speaks of a “dwelling place” and “the house of my sojourning.”
In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB commonly presents the construct phrase with “sojourning” or “sojournings,” especially in land clauses. It also uses “dwelling place” in Job 18:19, while Psalm 55:16 does not visibly reflect the term; These are presentations of the clauses rather than fixed renderings.
