cha.nit denotes a weapon carried in battle, wielded or hurled against an opponent, and kept among military equipment.

The attested noun denotes a battle weapon: people hold it, wield it, throw it, take it from an enemy, or keep it with other arms. It also occurs in descriptions of military equipment, violent conflict, and the transformation of weapons into farming implements.

   In 1 Samuel 18:11 the APB renders Saul as hurling it at David, while 2 Samuel 2:23 describes Abner striking Asahel with it. In 1 Samuel 26:7 it is stuck in the ground at Saul's head, and 2 Chronicles 23:9 places the plural among equipment given to commanders. Isaiah 2:4 depicts such weapons being beaten into pruning hooks.

In the Anselm Project Bible: Across the clearer military clauses, the APB regularly presents the noun as “spear,” including weapons in a hand, thrown at a target, or kept with shields. Verses whose English wording does not visibly identify the item do not establish a different rendering.
