1A Maskil of Asaph. Give ear, O my people, to my instruction; incline your ears to the words of my mouth.2I will open my mouth in a proverb; I will utter riddles from of old.3Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have recounted to us.4We will not hide them from their sons, recounting to the last generation the praises of the LORD, his strength, and the wonders that he performed.5He established a testimony in Jacob and set instruction in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to make known to their sons.6That a last generation might know—sons who will be born—so that they may arise and recount to their sons.7They will set their trust in God and will not forget the deeds of God, but will keep his commandments.8They will not be like their fathers, a rebellious and defiant generation whose heart was not prepared and whose spirit was not faithful with God.9The sons of Ephraim, handlers of the shooting bow, turned back in the day of battle.10They did not keep the covenant of God and refused to walk in his instruction.11They forgot his deeds and the wonders that he had shown them.12He performed a wonder before their fathers in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.13He broke the sea and caused them to pass through; he made the waters stand like a heap.14He led them by a cloud in the daytime and by the light of fire throughout the night.15He broke rocks in the wilderness and gave them water to drink in abundance like the deeps.16He brought streams out of the rock and caused waters to flow down like rivers.17Yet they continued to sin against him by rebelling against the Most High in the dry land.18They tested God in their heart by demanding food for their soul.19They spoke against God, saying, "Is God able to spread a table in the wilderness?"20Look! He struck the rock so that waters gushed out and torrents overflowed; can he also give bread or provide flesh for his people?21Therefore the LORD heard and became angry; fire blazed against Jacob, and wrath also rose against Israel.22For they did not believe in God or trust in his salvation.23He commanded the clouds above and opened the doors of heaven.24He rained manna upon them for food and gave them the grain of heaven.25Man ate the bread of the mighty ones; he sent them provision until they were satisfied.26He stirred up an east wind in the heavens and drove a south wind by his power.27He rained flesh upon them like dust and winged birds like the sand of the seas.28He caused them to fall in the midst of their camp, all around their dwellings.29They ate and were fully satisfied, and he gave them what they craved.30They were not yet estranged from their craving while their food was still in their mouths.31The anger of God rose against them; he killed among their fat ones and struck down the young men of Israel.32Despite all this they still sinned and did not believe in his wonders.33He ended their days in vanity and their years in sudden terror.34When he killed them, they sought him; they turned back and sought God earnestly.35They remembered that God was their rock and the Most High God their redeemer.36They flattered him with their mouth and lied to him with their tongue.37Their heart was not steadfast with him, nor were they faithful to his covenant.38Yet he, being compassionate, forgave iniquity and did not destroy them; he often restrained his anger and did not stir up all his wrath.39He remembered that they were but flesh, a spirit that passes and does not return.40How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and grieved him in the wasteland.41They turned back and tested God and wounded the Holy One of Israel.42They did not remember his hand or the day when he redeemed them from the enemy.43When he performed his signs in Egypt and his wonders in the field of Zoan.44He turned their rivers into blood so that their streams could not be drunk.
