The term marks continuing succession in settings of lasting observance and remembrance. In Exodus 31:16 the plural construct form occurs where the Sabbath is to be observed as a perpetual covenant; in Genesis 17:7 it frames the covenant with Abraham's seed after him, and in Esther 9:28 the APB renders the commemoration as being observed in every "generation and generation." Repeated singular forms can likewise describe continuity from one generation to the next, as in Exodus 17:16 and Isaiah 13:20.

The singular form can designate a contemporaneous body of people characterized by its situation or conduct. In Deuteronomy 2:14 it is the whole body of fighting men that perishes from the camp; in Deuteronomy 32:5 and Deuteronomy 32:20 it is described as crooked, twisted, and perverse, while Genesis 7:1 identifies the time in which Noah is found righteous. Jeremiah 2:31 directly addresses such a body and calls it to consider the word of the LORD.
In the Anselm Project Bible: Across these verses, the APB commonly presents the temporal use with phrases such as "throughout your generations" and "from generation to generation," while it uses "generation" for a present collective body. Because the APB is a whole-verse translation, those English expressions confirm the clauses' temporal or collective setting rather than supplying a word-for-word rendering.
