Eliphaz's Accusation and Counsel (part 1)

Job 4:1-5:23
1Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said, 2Will a word be tested with you? Will you grow weary? Who is able to restrain speech? 3Behold, you have disciplined many, and you strengthen weak hands. 4Your speech raises up the stumbler, and you strengthen knees that bow. 5For now it comes to you, and you grow weary; it touches you, and you are dismayed. 6Is not your fear your confidence, your hope, and the integrity of your ways? 7Remember, please: who that was innocent has perished, and where have the upright been hidden? 8As I have seen, those who plow wickedness and sow trouble reap it. 9By the breath of God they perish, and by the spirit of his face they come to an end. 10The roaring of the lion and the voice of the lion and the teeth of lions are broken. 11The lion perishes for lack of prey, and lion cubs are scattered. 12A word was brought to me, and my ear received a whisper of it. 13Amid disquietings from night visions, when deep sleep falls on people, 14Dread came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones shake. 15A spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh bristled. 16It stood still, but I could not recognize its appearance; a likeness was before my eyes; there was silence, and then I heard a voice. 17Can a human be justified before God? Can a man be pure before his Creator? 18Look, he puts no trust in his servants, and he charges his messengers with error. 19Indeed, those who dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, are crushed before the moth. 20From morning until evening they are crushed; they perish forever without anyone noticing. 21Is not their cord pulled up within them? They die, and that without wisdom.
Chapter 5
1Call now; is there anyone who will answer you? To which of the holy ones will you turn? 2For vexation slays the fool, and jealousy kills the naive. 3I myself saw a fool, but suddenly I cursed his pasture. 4His sons are far from salvation; they are crushed in the gate, and there is no one to rescue. 5The hungry eat his harvest, and even from thorns they take it; and the snare pants after the wealth. 6For evil does not come out from the dust, nor does trouble spring from the land. 7For man is born to trouble, and the sons of the flame fly upward. 8But as for me, I would seek God, and to God I would set my cause. 9He does great things beyond search, wondrous things until there is no number, 10Who gives rain upon the face of the land and sends water upon the face of the earth, 11To set the lowly on high, and those who mourn are lifted to safety. 12He breaks the plots of the prudent, and their hands do not achieve wisdom. 13He captures the wise in their craftiness, and the counsel of the crooked is hastened. 14By day they meet darkness, and like the night they feel at midday. 15He saves the needy from the sword of the mouth and from the hand of the strong. 16So the poor have hope, and injustice has shut its mouth. 17Behold, blessed is the human whom God rebukes; do not reject the discipline of the Almighty. 18For he causes pain, and he binds up; he wounds, and his hands heal. 19In six distresses he will rescue you, and in seven no evil will touch you. 20In famine he ransomed you from death, and in battle from the hand of the sword. 21From the whip of the tongue you will be hidden, and you will not fear violence when it comes. 22At violence and famine you will laugh, and you will not fear the beast of the land. 23For with the stones of the field is your covenant, and the beast of the field is allied to you.
