ma.nah denotes an assigned share, whether food or sacrificial meat, a gift sent to others, or a person's allotted lot.

The word most often marks a specific share assigned or given from food, sacrificial meat, or provisions; it also names portions sent to others in celebration and, in construct forms, an allotted personal lot.

1. An assigned share of food, provisions, or offerings · dominant

   In 1 Samuel 1:4 the APB renders Elkanah's giving of shares to Peninnah and her children, while 1 Samuel 9:23 describes a share set aside for Saul. In Exodus 29:26, Leviticus 7:33, and Leviticus 8:29, the term identifies a specified piece from a sacrificial ram or peace offering assigned to a person; 2 Chronicles 31:19 extends the pattern to shares given among priests and Levites.

2. Shares sent to others in celebration · common

   In Esther 9:19 and Esther 9:22, the APB renders the plural as items sent from one person to another amid feasting and joy. Nehemiah 8:10 directs the people to send them to those for whom nothing has been prepared, and Nehemiah 8:12 places sending them alongside eating, drinking, and celebration.

   The construct singular occurs where a share is expressed as belonging or assigned to someone: in Jeremiah 13:25 the APB renders an allotment declared to the addressee, and in Psalm 16:5 it places the speaker's share alongside “my cup” and “my lot.”

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB commonly presents the term as “portion” or “portions,” including shares of sacrificial meat, provisions, and items sent to others. It also uses “portion allotted” in Jeremiah 13:25; because the APB is a whole-verse translation, its wording does not by itself define the term.
