pe.le.tah denotes those—or, in one crop context, what—left after destruction, threat, or loss.

The term identifies people or groups left alive after danger, defeat, or devastation, as in the threatened loss of all escapees in 2 Samuel 15:14 and the remaining people of Judah in 2 Kings 19:30. It can also refer to what remains after loss: Exodus 10:5 applies it to the portion left from the hail.

   The absolute form identifies people whose continued existence is at stake: in 2 Samuel 15:14 the APB renders David's warning, "there will not be a survivor," and in Ezekiel 14:22 it describes sons and daughters brought out. Construct forms also occur in group expressions; in 2 Kings 19:30 the APB renders a surviving remnant of Judah that will take root and bear fruit, while Exodus 10:5 applies the term to the portion remaining after hail.

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB presents the relevant clauses with wording such as "survivor," "remnant," "remainder of what survives," and "escape." These English variations do not establish separate meanings; in some verses, including Genesis 32:9 and Joel 3:5, the term's particular contribution is not readily isolated from the whole-verse rendering.
