kap.po.ret is the gold object placed over the ark, beneath and between the cherubim, where speech is heard and ritual blood is applied.

The occurrences consistently identify a particular gold object associated with the ark: it is made to specified dimensions, placed on or over the ark, and flanked by cherubim. It is also the location above which speech is heard and the object covered by incense or approached with blood in the rites described in Leviticus.

   The noun identifies the crafted object made of pure gold and set on the ark: in Exodus 25:17 the APB renders its prescribed length and width, and in Exodus 25:21 it renders its placement on the ark from above. In Exodus 25:18 and Exodus 25:20, cherubim are made from its ends and spread wings over it.
