hin.nom names the valley location used in boundary descriptions and in accounts of actions carried out there.

The term is consistently a proper place-name for a valley location: boundary accounts locate it near the Jebusite area, while other passages identify it as the setting for sacrifices, fire rituals, proclamations, and a coming renaming.

   The form is a proper noun in each cited occurrence. In Joshua 15:8 and Joshua 18:16, the APB renders boundary routes by or through the valley; in 2 Chronicles 28:3 and 2 Kings 23:10, it is the location of sacrifices and of passing children through fire. In Jeremiah 7:31 and Jeremiah 19:6, the APB places built high places and a future change of the valley's name at that same location.

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB presents the place designation with variation, including “Valley of the son of Hinnom,” “Valley of Hinnom,” and “Valley of Ben-hinnom.” These phrases show the verse-level presentation of the location rather than a fixed English equivalent for the term alone.
