da.rom denotes the southern direction or side, especially in directional movement and spatial description.

The term consistently marks the southern direction, side, or approach. It is especially frequent in Ezekiel’s spatial descriptions of gates, chambers, entrances, and a measured side, while other verses use it for movement toward the south, a location in the south, or conditions coming from that direction.

Senses in use

  1. Southern side or approach in built space · dominant

In Ezekiel 40:24 and Ezekiel 40:27, the masculine singular absolute form identifies the direction of travel and of gates in the measured complex. Ezekiel 40:28, Ezekiel 40:45, Ezekiel 41:11, Ezekiel 42:13, and Ezekiel 42:18 likewise place a gate, chamber, entrance, or measured side on that directional side; in Ezekiel 42:18 the APB renders the clause "He measured the southern side."

  2. Direction or location in broader setting · common

Ecclesiastes 1:6 places the movement of the spirit toward one direction and then toward the north, and Ecclesiastes 11:3 locates a fallen tree on that side or on the north. Deuteronomy 33:23 names it alongside the sea as part of Naphtali’s possession, while Job 37:17 describes the earth becoming still from that direction.

  3. Direction of prophetic address · occasional

In Ezekiel 21:2, the singular absolute form occurs in commands to set the face, drip, and prophesy; the APB instead presents the target as Jerusalem, the sanctuaries, and the land of Israel. The verse therefore shows directional orientation in prophetic speech, though the translation does not isolate the term’s contribution.

In the Anselm Project Bible: Across the occurrences, the APB commonly uses "south," "southern," or "southern side" in directional and spatial clauses. In Ezekiel 21:2, however, its wording names Jerusalem, sanctuaries, and Israel rather than transparently isolating the term.
