The term characterizes persons as wise in contexts of conduct, discernment, teaching, judgment, and skilled building, while several passages contrast those regarded as wise with foolishness or expose the limits of wisdom associated with this age. It also occurs comparatively of what is “wiser” than human beings in the APB’s rendering of 1 Corinthians 1:25.

1. Wise persons or what is judged wiser · dominant

   The adjective identifies people regarded as wise: in 1 Corinthians 3:10 the APB renders the speaker as a “wise master-builder” who laid a foundation, and in 1 Corinthians 6:5 it asks whether there is a wise person able to judge between brothers. The same designation is tested or contrasted in 1 Corinthians 3:18, where someone who thinks he is wise in this age is told to become foolish so that he may become wise; in Romans 1:22, those claiming to be wise become fools. In 1 Corinthians 1:25, the comparative form occurs in the clause the APB renders “the foolish thing of God is wiser than human beings.”
