The occurrences consistently show seeking information through a question or request for an answer: officials ask about identity and actions, observers ask what an event means, and others seek details such as a birthplace, an hour, an origin, or an intended message.

1. Seeking information by questioning · dominant

   The imperfect middle forms introduce questions about a birthplace in Matthew 2:4, an unexplained scene in Luke 15:26, a passing crowd in Luke 18:36, and a person's identity and actions in Acts 21:33. Other forms likewise occur where information is sought about an hour in John 4:52, an intended message in Acts 23:19, and a province of origin in Acts 23:34; in these verses the APB renders the clauses with forms of “inquired,” “asking,” or “learning.”
