The term most often identifies the one given or sent to be with recipients, who teaches, reminds, and testifies in the John passages; in 1 John it occurs in the clause describing an advocate with the Father when anyone sins.

   In John 14:16, the accusative singular form occurs in the request that another be given to remain with the recipients; the APB renders “another counsellor.” In John 14:26, John 15:26, and John 16:7, the nominative singular form identifies the one sent to teach and remind, to testify, and to come after the speaker goes away.

   In 1 John 2:1, the accusative singular form occurs after the condition that anyone sins and is placed in the clause concerning an advocate with the Father; the APB presents Jesus Christ the righteous in that role.
