to give
Didomi describes giving or granting something to another, from material provision and life to authority, instruction, and a sound.
The sampled verses most often show a person or God providing or bestowing something on another—such as a body, life, rain, peace, or the Spirit. The term also occurs where authority, service, instructions, or a command is conferred, and where an instrument or speaker produces a sound or intelligible word.
Senses in use
-
Bestowing provisions, gifts, or benefits · dominant
This is the broadest use: the verb marks provision to a recipient. In 1 Corinthians 15:38 the APB renders God giving each seed its own body; in 1 John 5:11 it renders God giving eternal life; and in Acts 14:17 it describes giving rains, fruitful seasons, food, and gladness.
-
Conferring authority, service, or instruction · common
In these clauses the item conferred is an authorization, task, or directive rather than a material object. In 2 Corinthians 10:8 the APB renders authority given for building up, while 2 Corinthians 5:18 speaks of a service given, and 1 John 3:23 refers to a commandment given.
-
Producing a sound or spoken expression · occasional
The verb can describe what an instrument or speaker puts forth. In 1 Corinthians 14:7 the APB renders lifeless instruments as “giving a voice,” and 1 Corinthians 14:8–9 places the verb in conditional clauses about giving a clear sound or an intelligible word.
In the Anselm Project Bible: Across the sampled verses, the APB commonly presents the action with “given” or “gives,” but also uses “grant” for repentance and boldness and describes instruments as “giving a voice.” Because the APB is a whole-verse translation, these English expressions indicate the clauses' presentation rather than fixed renderings.
