anagkaios describes what a situation, purpose, person, or need calls for as required or more urgently needed.

The occurrences consistently mark something as called for by a circumstance or purpose: actions to be taken, the prior speaking of the word of God, a priest’s offering, continued presence for others, and persons or needs regarded as required.

   The neuter singular form marks actions or situations regarded as required: in 2 Corinthians 9:5 the APB renders a decision to urge the brothers and arrange the gift in advance, and in Acts 13:46 it renders the word of God being spoken first. In Hebrews 8:3 the clause concerns having something to offer, while Philippians 2:25 concerns sending Epaphroditus; Philippians 1:24 uses the comparative form for remaining in the flesh for the readers’ sake. The same evaluation extends to body members in 1 Corinthians 12:22 and to friends and practical needs in Acts 10:24 and Titus 3:14.

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB commonly presents the relevant clauses with “necessary,” and uses “more necessary” in Philippians 1:24; elsewhere it expresses the same setting through “must” and “pressing needs.” These are presentations of the clauses rather than fixed renderings in every occurrence.
