Edom
Edom is a biblical region south of the Dead Sea, associated with Esau’s descendants and frequently named at Israel’s borders.
In the Bible, Edom is the region south of the Dead Sea, described as the land of Esau’s descendants; Genesis also places it in the land of Seir (Genesis 32:3). The name occurs in at least 55 verses across 23 books, from Genesis 32:3 to Malachi 1:4.
Several passages define Edom in relation to borders and travel. Israel turned away after Edom refused passage through its border (Numbers 20:21). The southern boundary described in Numbers runs by Edom from the wilderness of Zin and the end of the Salt Sea, while Joshua places Judah’s allotment toward Edom’s border (Numbers 34:3; Joshua 15:1). Genesis refers to chiefs and kings in the land of Edom (Genesis 36:16; Genesis 36:31).
Edom also appears in accounts of conflict and prophetic speech. Amos speaks concerning Edom’s transgressions (Amos 1:11), Obadiah records a vision addressed to Edom and a call among the nations for battle (Obadiah 1:1), and Ezekiel says that Mount Seir and all Edom would become a devastation (Ezekiel 35:15).
