Ruth
Ruth is the Moabite daughter-in-law of Naomi who remains with her and becomes Boaz’s wife.
Ruth in the Bible is the Moabite woman first named in Ruth 1:4, Naomi’s daughter-in-law, who returns with Naomi and becomes the wife of Boaz. She is named in at least 18 verses across the books of Ruth and Matthew.
The account says that Ruth clung to Naomi after Orpah kissed her mother-in-law goodbye. Ruth tells Naomi that she will go and lodge with her, and that Naomi’s people and God will be hers; Naomi then sees that Ruth is determined to go with her (Ruth 1:14, Ruth 1:16, Ruth 1:18). Naomi and Ruth arrive in Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest (Ruth 1:22).
Ruth asks to glean in a field, and Boaz tells her to remain close to his young women. She continues gleaning through the barley and wheat harvests while living with Naomi (Ruth 2:2, Ruth 2:8, Ruth 2:23). Ruth identifies herself to Boaz as his maidservant and calls him a redeemer (Ruth 3:9). Boaz takes Ruth as his wife; the passage says the LORD gives her conception and she bears a son (Ruth 4:13). Matthew names Ruth in the line that includes Iobed (Matthew 1:5).
