The attested clauses most clearly show beautifying or adorning a house, sanctuary, or people; self-directed forms also occur where an instrument or Israel claims honor for itself.

1. Beautifying or adorning what is honored · dominant

   Piel forms occur where the king's action concerns the house of the LORD in Ezra 7:27, where the sanctuary is the place to be beautified in Isaiah 60:13, and where the speaker says that the house will be beautified in Isaiah 60:7. In Psalm 149:4, the APB renders the clause "he adorns the humble with salvation," placing the action upon the humble.

2. Claiming honor for oneself · occasional

   The Hithpael imperfect in Isaiah 10:15 occurs in the rhetorical question about an axe over the one who chops with it; the APB renders this as the axe "boast[ing]" or the saw exalting itself. In Judges 7:2, Israel is warned not to claim the deliverance as its own; the APB renders the clause "lest Israel glorify itself over me."

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB presents the Piel clauses with "beautify" and "adorns" in passages concerning a house, sanctuary, and humble people. In the self-directed clauses it uses "boast," "exalt itself," and "glorify itself"; these are verse-level renderings rather than definitions.
