Sal is a container for bread or food, used in offerings and in the baker's dream.

The attested use is a physical container: it holds unleavened bread in offering procedures, contains food in Gideon's preparation, and appears as the containers carried on the baker's head in Genesis 40.

   The singular forms identify the container from which unleavened items are taken or in which bread is kept: in Exodus 29:23 the APB renders a wafer taken “from the basket of unleavened bread,” and in Leviticus 8:26 it renders cakes and a wafer taken “from the basket of unleavened bread.” In Genesis 40:16 the plural construct form occurs in the baker's dream of three containers on his head, while Genesis 40:17 describes food in the uppermost one and birds eating from it. Judges 6:19 likewise places prepared flesh in the container.

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB generally presents the term as “basket,” especially where bread, wafers, or food are placed in it or taken from it. In Numbers 6:17, although the supplied form is present, the translation’s clause does not explicitly render a basket.
