nokh.ri identifies a person, people, place, or thing as outside the relevant community or homeland.

The adjective most often marks people as outside Israel, a household, or another stated community, including foreigners, women, and strangers. The same outside association also describes lands, a city, a house, clothing, a vine, and an unusual work or service.

Senses in use

  1. Outside the relevant people or place · dominant

Across its masculine and feminine singular and plural absolute forms, the adjective marks persons and things by their association with an outside group or setting. In 1 Kings 8:41 the clause identifies a man as not from Israel and coming from a distant land; in Ezra 10:10 the APB renders the clause about women settled among the community as “foreign women.” The same designation is applied to a city in Judges 19:12, a foreign land in Exodus 2:22, and a work and service in Isaiah 28:21.

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB commonly uses “foreigner” and “foreign,” including “foreign women,” but also uses “stranger,” “outsider,” and “strange” in particular clauses. These renderings show the verse-level presentation rather than fixed English equivalents.
