cha.shum is a proper name used for an ancestral group and for an individual named among public officials.

The occurrences use this proper name chiefly in references to “the sons of” the named ancestor or family group; it also identifies an individual in lists of names, including those beside Ezra and a list in Nehemiah.

   The proper noun occurs in the phrase “sons of” in Ezra 2:19, Nehemiah 7:22, and Ezra 10:33. In Ezra 2:19 and Nehemiah 7:22 the APB renders a numbered group, while in Ezra 10:33 it renders a list of men “From the sons of Hashum.”

   The proper noun appears among personal names in Nehemiah 10:19 and among those standing at Ezra’s left in Nehemiah 8:4. In Nehemiah 8:4 the APB renders the surrounding clause, “on his left stood Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam.”

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB presents the name explicitly as “Hashum” in the family-group notices and in the list beside Ezra. In Nehemiah 10:19 it gives only the surrounding list of names.
