ochlos denotes a gathered body of people that follows, hears, questions, or reacts together.

The term consistently denotes people considered as a gathered collective: they assemble to hear and seek Jesus, respond together to events or teaching, and at times become a force that can be stirred up or restrained.

1. A gathered body of people · dominant

   The forms designate people acting as a collective in varied scenes: in John 6:2 the APB renders a great group following because of the signs, while in Luke 5:1 it renders a group pressing upon him and hearing the word of God. In John 12:34 the gathered people answer with a question, and in Acts 16:22 the singular collective rises together against them. Acts 21:34 further shows people within the gathering shouting conflicting things.

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB commonly presents the term as “crowd” or “crowds,” and in Acts 14:18 renders the surrounding clause with “the people.” These renderings confirm the collective setting rather than establish separate lexical senses.
