Thomas is the personal name used for a disciple named in apostolic lists and in several dialogues with Jesus.

The term functions consistently as a personal name: it identifies the disciple in lists with other disciples, introduces his words in dialogue, and marks his presence or absence in the scenes of John 20.

   The nominative form identifies the same individual among named disciples in Acts 1:13, John 21:2, and Matthew 10:3; in Acts 1:13 the APB renders a list including "Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas." It also introduces his speech in John 11:16 and John 14:5, while John 20:24, John 20:26, John 20:27, and John 20:28 distinguish his absence, presence, address, and answer in the same episode.

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB normally presents the name as "Thomas" in lists, narration, and direct address. In John 11:16, John 20:24, and John 21:2 it also includes "called the Didymus" or "who is called Didymus"; That accompanying wording should not be treated as a separate rendering of the term.
