Peter's Threefold Denial

Biblical Theology Themes

The Gospel accounts record Peter’s denials, the rooster’s crowing, and his remembrance of Jesus’ words.

The Bible says Peter denied knowing Jesus, remembered Jesus’ words that he would deny him three times before the rooster crowed, and wept. In Matthew, Peter denies knowing “the man” with an oath; afterward he remembers Jesus’ words and weeps bitterly (Matthew 26:72; Matthew 26:75). Mark likewise records his remembrance and weeping after the rooster crowed (Mark 14:72). Luke records the Lord looking at Peter before he remembered the saying (Luke 22:61). John states that Peter denied again and the rooster crowed (John 18:27).
