Perseverance
A biblical theme expressed in calls to endure, hold fast, pray persistently, and continue in good work.
The Bible speaks of perseverance through passages that call for holding fast, continuing in good work, and enduring. In Luke 8:15, those who hold the word fast bear fruit with perseverance. Galatians 6:9 says not to grow weary in doing good, with a harvest promised if one does not give up.
The word or idea recurs in at least 48 verses across 19 books. Romans 5:3 states that pressure produces perseverance, and Romans 5:4 says perseverance produces test and test produces hope. 2 Thessalonians 1:4 refers to perseverance and faith amid persecutions and pressures. Ephesians 6:18 calls for alert prayer with perseverance and petition for all the saints.
Several passages use the language of holding fast or pressing on. Hebrews 10:23 calls for holding the confession of hope without wavering, while Hebrews 12:1 speaks of running the race set before believers with perseverance. 1 Timothy 4:16 directs attention to oneself and the teaching, with an instruction to persevere in them.
