sha.tach describes laying things out or dispersing them across a surface or area.

The attested use describes placing or distributing items over an area: a covering over a well, grain upon it, bodies before the heavenly host, and quail around the camp. In Job 12:23 and Psalm 88:10, the translation does not isolate the verb's contribution clearly enough to establish a further distinct use.

   In 2 Samuel 17:19, the sequential imperfect occurs as the woman puts a covering over the well's mouth and grain upon it; the APB renders the actions “spread the covering” and “spread the grain.” In Jeremiah 8:2, the plural sequential perfect describes bodies being placed before the sun, moon, and host of heaven, while Numbers 11:32 uses plural forms for quail laid out around the camp; the APB renders these clauses “They will spread them” and “they spread them out for themselves.”

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB uses “spread” or “spread them out” in 2 Samuel 17:19, Jeremiah 8:2, and Numbers 11:32. In Job 12:23 it renders the surrounding clause with “he enlarges nations,” while Psalm 88:10 supplies no clear corresponding English wording.
