The term most often identifies people or other beings outside a specified group, such as the wise men, associates, exiles, or beasts. It also occurs for what remains of silver and gold and for additional provisions needed for God’s house.

1. People or beings outside the named group · dominant

   The construct singular form identifies a collective group beyond those specifically named: in Daniel 2:18 the APB renders Daniel and his companions as facing destruction with “the rest of the wise men of Babylon,” while Ezra 4:9 and Ezra 4:17 speak of the remaining associates. Ezra 6:16 likewise places the rest of the sons of the exile alongside Israel, priests, and Levites.

2. Other beasts after the focal beast · common

   In Daniel 7:12 the construct singular occurs in the clause about “the rest of the beasts” after their dominion is removed. In Daniel 7:7 and Daniel 7:19, the determined singular marks those trampled by the fourth beast’s feet; the APB renders this as “the remainder” and “the rest.”
