na.phish is a proper name appearing in lists of Ishmael’s sons and among those fought in war.

The attested form is a proper name: it occurs in genealogical lists alongside other sons of Ishmael and in a war report naming Naphish among those opposed.

   In Genesis 25:15 and 1 Chronicles 1:31, the proper-noun form appears in lists that include Jetur and Kedemah; in 1 Chronicles 1:31 the APB renders the list as sons of Ishmael. In 1 Chronicles 5:19, the same proper-noun form is named among those with whom war was made; the APB renders, “And they made war with the Hagri, Jetur, Naphish, and Nodab.”

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB presents the term as “Naphish” in each verse: twice in name lists and once among those named in a war account. These renderings are taken only as confirmation of the proper-name use shown by the clauses.
