The dominant attested use concerns forceful movement: creatures are drawn up in a net, violence carries away the wicked, and a tempest whirls in Habakkuk 1:15, Proverbs 21:7, and Jeremiah 30:23. Other occurrences concern stones worked by a saw and the swine’s lack of cud-chewing in 1 Kings 7:9 and Leviticus 11:7.

   The Qal imperfect forms occur where a hook and net bring creatures up in Habakkuk 1:15 and where the wicked’s violence carries them away in Proverbs 21:7; the APB renders these clauses “he drags them with his net” and “drags them away.” In Jeremiah 30:23, the Hithpolel participle occurs in the announcement that a whirling tempest will come upon the wicked; the APB renders the action “it will whirl.”

   In 1 Kings 7:9, the passive participle describes precious stones in the clause the APB renders “sawn with the saw.” In Leviticus 11:7, the Niphal imperfect stands in the description of the swine, which the APB says “does not chew the cud.”

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB variously presents the relevant clauses with “sawn,” “drags,” “whirl,” and “chew the cud.” Because it is a whole-verse translation, these renderings indicate the clauses’ contexts rather than fixed equivalents.
