The term marks individuals and groups designated in relation to the LORD or to the speaker: a servant, Moses, Saul, Jacob and Israel, and the people brought out with rejoicing. Its singular and plural construct forms occur in clauses that identify those persons as “my,” “his,” or “the LORD’s.”

   The plural forms identify collective groups: in Isaiah 65:9 the APB renders a group from Jacob and Judah as those who “shall possess” the mountains, and in Psalm 105:43 it renders the people brought out with rejoicing as “his chosen ones.” The singular construct forms likewise identify particular persons in Isaiah 42:1, where the APB renders the servant as “my chosen one,” in Psalm 106:23, where Moses stands in the breach, and in 2 Samuel 21:6, where Saul is called “the chosen of the LORD.”

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB commonly presents the term with “chosen one” or “chosen ones,” including “my chosen one” in Isaiah 42:1 and “his chosen ones” in Psalm 105:43; 2 Samuel 21:6 has “the chosen of the LORD.” These renderings confirm the clauses’ presentation rather than supply a separate definition.
