Chilias denotes thousand-units used for counted people, military forces, vast crowds, and a measured city dimension.

The term marks quantities expressed in thousand-units, most often within numbered groups of people: those sealed in Revelation 7:4, tribal groups in Revelation 7:5, and the group with the Lamb in Revelation 14:1. The same numerical use also occurs for military forces in Luke 14:31, people killed in Revelation 11:13, an angelic multitude in Revelation 5:11, and the city’s measurement in Revelation 21:16.

1. Thousand-units in numerical totals · dominant

   The plural forms occur in explicit numerical totals and measurements. In Revelation 7:4 the nominative plural is part of the stated number of those sealed, while Revelation 11:13 gives a numbered group killed in the earthquake; in Luke 14:31 the clause compares forces of ten thousand and twenty thousand, and Revelation 21:16 gives the city’s measurement as twelve thousand stadia. In Revelation 5:11 the APB renders the surrounding count as “myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands.”

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB regularly presents the numerical expressions with “thousand,” including “five thousand,” “seven thousand,” “twelve thousand,” and “one hundred forty-four thousand.” These English number phrases confirm the verse-level totals rather than isolate every individual form’s rendering.
