Nazoraios is a designation associated with Nazareth, used chiefly of Jesus and also of a group called the Nazarenes.

The term chiefly identifies Jesus in connection with Nazareth, whether in public identification, accusation, testimony, or formal naming. A plural use in Acts 24:5 identifies a sect as “the Nazarenes.”

   The singular forms identify Jesus in varied clauses: in Acts 2:22 the APB renders “Jesus of Nazareth” as Peter addresses Israelites, while in John 18:5 those seeking him answer, “Jesus the Nazarene.” Matthew 2:23 places the nominative singular in the statement that he “will be called a Nazarene,” after dwelling in a city called Nazareth.

   In Acts 24:5 the genitive plural occurs in the charge that a man is “a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes.” The clause applies the designation collectively rather than naming Jesus directly.

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB variously presents the term as “the Nazarene,” “a Nazarene,” “of Nazareth,” and, in Acts 24:5, “the Nazarenes.” Because the APB is a whole-verse translation, these renderings show the verse-level presentation rather than fixed English equivalents.
