Epiblema is a piece placed on old clothing in sayings about a resulting tear or mismatch.

The attested use is a piece put onto an old garment or clothing, within sayings that describe tearing or a failure to match.

   All occurrences use the accusative singular neuter form in a statement about putting or sewing a piece onto old clothing. In Luke 5:36 the APB renders a piece taken from a new garment that “will not match the old”; in Mark 2:21 and Matthew 9:16 it renders a piece of unshrunk cloth whose placement results in a worse tear.

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB presents the item as a “patch” in all three verses, describing it as from a new garment in Luke 5:36 and as unshrunk cloth in Mark 2:21 and Matthew 9:16. Those descriptive differences should not be treated as separate meanings of the lemma.
