epano marks a relation of being over, above, or beyond something else in the clauses where it occurs.

As a function word, epano marks what is positioned over something, placed in a relation of authority over it, or described as beyond a stated amount: a star stands over a place, authority is over cities or the earth, and a group is described as more than five hundred.

1. Marks an over/above relation in a clause · dominant

   In Matthew 2:9 the APB renders the star as stopping “over the place where the child was,” while Matthew 27:37 places the written charge “over his head.” The same relation appears with authority in Luke 10:19 and Revelation 6:8, and with extent in 1 Corinthians 15:6, where the APB describes “more than five hundred brothers.”
