Dusme denotes the western direction, appearing in directional contrasts and descriptions of locations in Scripture.

The attested uses identify a western direction, most often set in contrast with east: people come from east and west, lightning shines from east to west, and a cloud rises upon the west. The same directional use also locates three gates on the west side.

   The genitive plural form occurs in directional expressions paired with east: in Luke 13:29 and Matthew 8:11 the APB renders people coming from “east and west,” and in Matthew 24:27 it renders lightning coming from the east and shining as far as the west. In Luke 12:54, the same form identifies the direction from which a cloud rises.

   In Revelation 21:13, the genitive plural form occurs in a sequence of compass directions that assigns three gates to each side; the APB renders “on the west three gates.”

In the Anselm Project Bible: The APB presents the term as “west” in each supplied verse, either in contrast with “east,” as the source direction of a cloud, or as the side bearing three gates. These renderings confirm the directional setting rather than isolate every grammatical contribution.
