The occurrences most often show a settled purpose held in common: believers are to be united in one outlook, and the figures in Revelation act with one purpose. The word also marks a considered judgment offered in counsel and, in two contexts, an individual decision or consent.

1. Shared settled purpose · dominant

   In 1 Corinthians 1:10, the dative singular occurs in the appeal that the community be united in the same mind and in a common settled outlook; the APB renders the clause "united in the same mind and the same resolution." In Revelation 17:13 and Revelation 17:17, the accusative singular belongs to the statement that the figures act with one purpose in giving their power or kingdom to the wild animal.

2. Considered judgment in counsel · common

   The accusative singular appears where a speaker gives an assessment rather than a command in 1 Corinthians 7:25, comments on what is more blessed in 1 Corinthians 7:40, and offers counsel about what is profitable in 2 Corinthians 8:10. In these verses the APB renders the relevant statements with "my judgment" or "I give my judgment."

3. Personal decision or consent · occasional

   In Acts 20:3, the genitive singular occurs in the account of a return through Macedonia after a plot was formed; the APB renders the outcome, "he decided to return through Macedonia." In Philemon 1:14, the same form occurs in the statement that nothing was wished without the recipient's consent, so that the good deed would be voluntary rather than compelled.
